Artist Biography:

Maxine Noel (Ioyan Mani)

Maxine was born in the Canadian province of Manitoba of Santee Oglala Sioux parents. She spent her early childhood on her mother's reserve but at the age of six she left to attend an Indian residential school. Maxine's early career as a legal secretary was soon overshadowed by her preoccupation with painting and drawing. She took a course in advanced design where a teacher noticed Maxine's tendency toward linear expression and encouraged her in the use of shape and line to suggest movement. She learned those lessons well as evidenced by much of her work today. Since those early days Maxine has mastered the skills of painting and drawing plus the processes of serigraphy, etching and stone lithography. Recently she has turned her talents to the creation of editions in cast paper and limited edition bronze castings.

Maxine has received excellent response to her work and is now able to devote herself full-time to the creation of art.

Maxine Noel signs her artwork with her Sioux name IOYAN MANI, which translates as 'Walk Beyond'.

Moon by Robert Davidson, 1976

Serigraph #201 of 364.

Davidson's other similar prints are valued around $1000. It has been professionally matted and framed.

"One cool, crisp evening as Davidson walked from his studio to the house, the crescent moon stood out against the dark sky like a bright piece of a circle. The beauty of it impressed him, and the shape challenged him, for a circle is the most difficult with which to work in Northwest Coast art.

He saw the moon as a pendant, hanging there, and it became the beginning of a series of art works formed within a circle. He was to use the shape in many ways, from a small silver pendant to a large wooden screen, as well as in several silkscreen prints. From the pendant design - which was the moon, crescent-shaped but containing a human - he created an unusual series of prints, repeating the design using different colour combinations and backgrounds in order to experience the moon in different ways.

Davidson was intrigued with the type of blue-green that had been used in the past, and so for this print he experimented with the mixing of pigments to achieve the colour he wanted. Pleased with the result, he used it again on subsequent prints.

Many months later, when Davidson began to be more aware of himself and his relationship to his work, he saw that the man in the moon was himself. The hand forming the mouth symbolized for him the use of his hands as a mouthpiece since he communicated through his art."

The above comments are taken from Haida Printmaker, Hilary Stewart.

Davidson is one of Canada’s most respected and important contemporary visual artists. A Northwest Coast native of Haida and Tlingit Descent, he is a master carver of totem poles and masks and works in a variety of other media as a printmaker, painter and jeweler. Davidson’s passion to revive and perpetuate a variety of forms of Haida cultural expression, including song, dance and ceremony, has fueled his remarkable output throughout the years.

Founded in 2004 in Oaxaca, Mexico, ChocoSol is now in its tenth year. ChocoSol is a learning community/social enterprise that focuses on making the ‘food of the gods’ – commonly known as cacao – into fresh, whole food, stone ground chocolate on an artisanal scale.

Our artisanal chocolate is a symbol that embodies our values of socially just, ecological chocolate made, not only, with a ‘cradle to cradle’ approach, but also, charged with the use of solar energy, bicycle-powered product deliveries, and pedal-powered machines such as bicycle blenders at farmers’ markets and special events.

At ChocoSol, we consider ourselves slow food chocolate makers. Our whole food chocolate is made in small batches on site at our 1131 St. Clair Avenue West location in Toronto. Our chocolate is free of dairy, gluten, soy, nuts, preservatives or additives, and is also vegan. ChocoSol products are also wrapped in compostable and reusable packaging.

The main ingredient used in our chocolate is the organically- and shade-grown cacao bean sourced directly from Indigenous communities and forest gardens in the Lacondon Jungle of Chiapas, Mexico and the Oaxacan mountains of Southern Mexico. Our reciprocal horizontal trade relationships with the farmers go beyond the exchange of commodities, and extend to the exchange of heirloom seedlings, best practices and social enterprise models.

We specialize in both eating chocolate and drinking chocolate (xocolatl), and offer a number of other forest garden foods sourced directly from Mexican farmers such as coffee, cacao nibs, achiote, cinnamon and vanilla pods, among others.

We also use ingredients that are grown in Southern Ontario. The use of these ingredients extends to our corn tortillas, currently sold seasonally in farmers’ markets. Some of our locally sourced ingredients include: hemp seeds, maple sugar, herbs, spices, chilis, vegetables (corn, sprouts, tomatoes), and cheese among other products.

Kyoto Coffee

We love coffee. We also love the idea that coffee can provide trade, not aid, to small crop farmers and co-operatives from around the world. Our company focus is on providing organic, planet-friendly coffee. That's why we source our beans from companies who import a selection of organic coffee from the finest growing regions of the world. We are also proud supporters of many ethical coffee's. The result? Our earth wins, since no chemicals are used and, in many cases, the rainforest is used to help grow the coffee and not torn down. This means that the birds and animals who live in the trees don’t lose their habitat or digest poison, so they also win. The farmer wins because we pay more for that planet-friendly bean. You win because you have great tasting, fresh coffee today with no chemicals and surprisingly, it isn’t as expensive as you might think. Your children win, because every step toward a green future preserves their future.
